ABOUT THIS VIDEO: Love him or hate him, Billy Corgan is an interesting figure.
I have always loved the Smashing Pumpkins, mainly because I identified more with Corgan's grand vision than Cobain's slacker mentality, the drug-plagued lives of Alice in Chains, the jock-friendly "alternative rock" of Pearl Jam, or the "hairy balled He-Man" riffs of Soundgarden. He wanted to make an art form out of rock music, with each song representing the perfect crystallization of whatever he was feeling.
The man had vision. SPECIFIC vision. And that rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. Just look at Kim Deal who said, "I want the pill he has. The pill that makes him so fucking important."
The Pumpkins always insisted on being their own band instead of being lumped in with all the grunge acts of the early nineties. He was right to ask for that distinction because the Pumpkins were nothing like Nirvana. If a Pumpkins album didn't get released when they said it would be, it was because Billy was painstakingly tinkering away with it until things sounded like he wanted. It wasn't because he was in a bathroom stall on the nod somewhere.
With his blunt, outspoken ways, Corgan has been labelled an arrogant asshole for many, many years. But is he really? Is it arrogant if you can prove something? I don't think so. However, having said that, I do think he tends to hype things up to make up for something he lacks.
And what he lacks is self-esteem.
"Wait a minute," you say. "How can he lack self-esteem if he is arrogant?"
Well, watch the other videos on this playlist. Check out how I define "self-esteem" and "arrogance," and it will all make sense, especially when watched in conjunction with THIS video.
Even if you hate the Pumpkins, I hope you can open your mind to listen to what I have to say.
Who knows? You might even be able to admit I have a point.
