ABOUT THIS VIDEO: Mental health is a subject that is hardly ever discussed when it comes to martial arts. I can understand why. In class, the head instructor has enough to teach you in the way of technique. Plus, unless he is also a qualified mental health professional, he would probably feel uncomfortable giving such advice.
I'm no qualified professional either, but I feel no discomfort. I WILL talk about it, because I feel it is necessary.
There are many reasons why I made this playlist. Aside from wanting to confront mental health issues head on (instead of tucking them under the sheets like a dirty secret), I wanted to explain the difference between self-esteem, self-confidence, and arrogance. It seems like the world at large doesn't understand these terms are NOT interchangeable.
This might fly in the face of what most people have heard about martial arts. When you see an advertisement for a martial art school, it lists the benefits of learning. More often than not, it lists "build self-confidence" as one of the perks.
Well, I'm here to tell you that while martial arts can build self-CONFIDENCE, it does not build self-ESTEEM. Why? Because those terms don't mean the same thing!
I hate to destroy illusions, but then again, living with illusions are dangerous. Imagine if you were suffering from the illusion that you saw Charlize Theron waiting to make out with you, but in reality it was a boa constrictor! The lesson: illusions are bad, m'kay?
At any rate, I invite you to listen to the video. When you are done, hit "Subscribe" so you will know when the next video is out. :-)
