List of Techniques

There are many techniques in Wing Chun. At first glance, the number might seem daunting. On top of the wide variety of moves, you can do some of them in two different ways: passive or aggressive.

However, you shouldn't let this intimidate you, for a couple reasons.

  1. While there are many techniques, there are only a handful that you will use on a regular basis, whether it is in self-defense or during Chi Sao.
  2. The school you join will most likely have a curriculum/syllabus/order in which the techniques are taught. You shouldn't move on to the next technique until you are comfortable with the first one you are shown. In other words, a good Sifu/school will not allow you to get overwhelmed.
  3. You should always feel free to ask your Sifu about a technique if you are ever feeling lost or hopeless with anything.

Techniques by Name

Below are the names of several techniques. Clicking on the names will take you to a page that goes into greater details about each move. These pages will also have links to Steve Grogan-approved videos to help further your understanding.

There is one thing you should know about these techniques. Actually, this is something true of all martial arts, not just Wing Chun:

It's not how much you know, but HOW WELL you know it.

You could know the names of all these techniques, be able to recite them in your sleep, so on and so forth, but if you cannot do them, then all your knowledge is useless.

In other words, don't get hung up on the names or vocabulary. Those will come in time. Instead, focus on burning these techniques into your muscle memory. After all, you are trying to learn Wing Chun...not a new language!
