ABOUT THIS VIDEO: Have you ever laughed at the butterfly kick? (See the thumbnail for this video.) The "Superman Punch?" How about the spinning back kick?
If you have, then this video is for you.
I'm here to tell you: these techniques are not jokes. In fact, I don't believe ANY martial art technique is. Not anymore.
Since Wing Chun's movements are small and economical, we tend to get a chip on our shoulders and mock anything that is a wide, sweeping movement. I am guilty of this myself.
This isn't limited to Wing Chun practitioners, of course. Armchair enthusiasts do it too. They sit in their recliners, feet up, beer in each hand, watching the latest MMA tournament, making fun of any technique that is super telegraphed.
Here's the thing though: those techniques can and do land. So what does that mean? That the person who gets hit by them must be a crappy martial artist?
I say: absolutely NOT!
And do you know why?
Because the only way the flashy techniques are useless is if someone uses them as their FIRST ATTACK...but that isn't what they do.
They SET UP FOR IT, and it's the setup that can get you.
Also, think about this: the person who uses those techniques has been practicing them for a long time, and that includes training so they will LAND.
And if they do, then you're going to have to deal with it.
